Thanks to the expansion of the Credit One Stadium, Charleston’s music scene is as sweet as a sugary Lowcountry praline.

With the conclusion of the Credit One Charleston Open, a premier Women’s Tennis Association tour tournament which was won by Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, the open-air stadium is equipped to host an array of concert series this summer. Located next to the Family Circle Cup Tennis Center on Daniel Island, the newly renovated Credit One Stadium seats 11,000 people and provides a beautiful backdrop of the Charleston skyline, Wando River, and Ravenel Bridge. This setting is idyllic for listening to live music on a breezy summer night, and, with the current line-up of big name artists, folks may want to forego their vacation plans and staycation in Charleston!

The Zack Brown Band kicked off the summer concert series in April, but take his lyrical advice and “put the world away for a minute” to get “knee deep in the water somewhere” and explore all historical landmarks, culinary delights, white sand beaches, pluff mudd tidal creeks, and live music venues around Charleston. Here are a few of the upcoming shows at Credit One Stadium this summer.

Thursday, May 12th: Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town

At the 2022 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards Show, Miranda Lambert received three major awards: Female Artist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, and Video of the Year. Recent hit songs such as “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home), “Acting Up,” and “If I Was a Cowboy” have propelled this iconic country star back into the limelight. Accompanied by Little Big Town, a band well-known for its hit songs “Girl Crush,” “Boondocks,” “Day Drinking,” “Better Man,” and “Never Love You Again” to name a few. Grab your cowgirl hat and boots, because this show is certain to be a stomping good time.

Saturday, May 21st: The Lumineers

The Lumineers, an American folk band, unintentionally created an eclectic following that defies demographics of age, economic status, and stereotypes. With its melodic music and soulful songs, this band appeals to young teenagers, retired seniors, and everyone in between. The band’s song “Ho Hey” made its mark in mainstream music in 2012, followed by “Cleopatria” (2016), and, most recently, “Brightside (2022). Fusing a blend of indie rock and folk music, The Lumineers rely on its storyful lyrics, stellar musicians, and organic energy to connect to the audience.

Wednesday, May 25th: Kenny Chesney

What better way to kick off “sweet summertime” than with country icon Kenny Chesney? The songwriter, who has released 20 albums and has 40 top 10 singles, is kicking off his “Here and Now” Tour with a stop in the Holy City. A native of Tennessee, Chesney’s decades old career has earned him 12 Country Music Awards, 11 Academy of Country Music Awards, 6 Grammys, and numerous other accolades. His Jimmy Buffet-style lyrics coupled with his guitar / banjo combination makes the beer seem colder and the night air saltier. Please note that while Chesny croons “no shirt, no shoes, no problem,” the event manager does require attire for admission (smile!). Tickets are selling fast for this almost sold-out show, so do not wait too long if the show interests you.

Tuesday, May 31 & Wednesday, June 1st: Phish

Similar to the followers of the Grateful Dead, fans of Phish travel across state lines to listen to the progressive rock band jam out for hours. The band, which was founded in 1983 and maintains its original members, creates a funky, psychedelic melody that addicts stalwart fans. One of the band’s most famous songs, “You Enjoy Myself” timbres upward of 20 minutes, with guitar chucking, riffing, and axing. From a showman standpoint, Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Jon Fishman, and Page McConnell, infuse a mix of musical genres and utilize lights to further amplify vicarious voices.

Friday, June 3rd and Saturday, June 4th: Dave Matthews Band

Following the Phish shows, Dave Matthews Band (DMB) takes the stage for two nights at the Credit One Stadium. DMB has its own dedicated followers and fans, many of whom travel around the country to attend his shows. Originating in 1991, the band consists of jazz players Carter Beauford and LeRoi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, and bass guitarist Stefan Lessard, a musical prodigy who joined the band when he was just 16 years old. The band made its debut playing along the eastern seaboard and performing at college bars and fraternity parties, and, in a few short years, DMB became a popular, globally-known band. As the recipient of numerous accolades and awards, DMB manages to keep the music consistent with its original roots and

Thursday, June 9th Rebelution Summer Vibes

A classic reggae band, Rebelution is bringing the Bahamian summer vibe to Charleston. The show, which was originally scheduled for 2020 but canceled because of Covid, will feature classic rasta songs, original reggae hits, nyabinghi drums, and mellow melodies.

Saturday, June 11th Jason Isbell & 400 Units along with Sheryl Crow

If all you want to do is have some fun, then Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell & the 400 Units can assure you are not the only one. Isbell, a native of Alabama, is a country folk singer songwriter who is well-known for songs Tour of Duty and Alabama Pines. Although not a veteran, his songs resonate with military members and the myriad of emotions they feel when serving in foreign countries and returning home. The band’s name, the 400 Units, is a reference to the moniker for Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Sheryl Crow, who is well known for hit songs such as “My Favorite Mistake” and “Everyday is a Winding Road,” recently released “Everything is Broken” with Isbell. The hit song is sure to be a highlight on tour!

Sunday, June 12th Black Crowes

GenXers rejoice: The band is back together. After an altercation (okay, so after years of altercations) between brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, the band split for good in 2015. Then, in 2019, agents announced they would perform one last tour, coined Shake Your Money Maker. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, the Robinson brothers formed the band in 1984 and combined elements of punk rock, heavy metal, and grunge music, similar to Atlanta born band R.E.M., to create a style of music that GenXers will forever claim as their own. Classic hits such as “She Talks to Angels,” “Jealous,” “Charming Mess,” and “Too Hard to Handle” are all part of this legendary 1990 album.

Friday, July 10th: One Republic and Need to Breathe

Christian rock band Need to Breathe, whose songs top mainstream music charts, and pop rock band One Republic team together for its Never Ending Summer tour. Brothers Bo and Bear Rinehart formed the band, whose songs express matters of the Christian faith and the qualities of Christ, but recently, after 20 years, Bo stepped away from the band to focus on other endeavors. One Republic, who is well known for its upbeat, memorable music, hails from Colorado and presents hits such as “Counting Stars,” “Apologize,” and “Someday” to name a few. This is certain to be a spiritual, soulful show!

Thursday, July 10th: Dierks Bentley

An American country musician, Dierks Bentley brings his Beers On Me tour to Charleston. The show features two other country music stars: Ashley McBryde and Travis Denning. Bentle’s hit singles “What Was I Thinking,” “Come Closer,” “Free and Easy,” “Beers On Me,” and several others are sensational crowd-pleasing, boot-stomping songs that will certainly get the Holy City rocking on its feet!

Saturday, July 23: Thomas Rhett

Born in Valdosta, Georgia, Thomas Rhett Akins has song-writing skills in his blood. His father, Rhett Akins was a prolific writer, and two worked together on “Stars of the Show,” “Goes Like This,” and “Drink A Little Beer.” After playing in a cover band in college, Thomas rolled the dice on his own and soon signed a record deal. His pop-style songs and country voice transcend his hits across music genres. Perhaps his most famous song, “Die a Happy Man,” which sat on the Billboard chart for a remarkable 17 weeks, is a tribute to his wife, Lauren. The Bring the Bar to You tour also features Parker McCollum and Connor Smith as special guests.

Tuesday, August 23: Santana

Fusiing reggae, Latin, jazz and classic rock, Carlos Santana, a Mexican-American song-writer and famed guitarist, has been jamming since the 1970s. His song “Black Magic Woman,” “Maria Maria,” and “Game of Love” are a few fan favorites, but all of his songs elicit a supernatural, rhythmic melody that melts away bad vibes and creates zen moods. Arguably the world’s best guitar player, Santana is characterized for his artistic sounds, riffs, and synth style.
